Thymoma Associated with Pure Red Cell Aplasia

Abstract
Pure red cell aplasia is a very rare disorder in which patients cease making new red cells. Their blood contains a marked reduction or absence of reticulocytes, and their bone marrow has an almost complete absence of reticulocytes.
However, they continue to make normal numbers of white Cell¢¥s and platelets, and their marrow has a normal cellularity.
In the past, thymoma have been described relatively frequently in association with myasthenia gravis and occasionally with Cushing¢¥s syndrome. Hematologic disorders that have been noted with thymomas include acquired pure red cell aplasia, aplastic anemia, and hypogammagiobulinemia.
The recognition of this association is of particular interest because of the occasional complete remissions of the anemia after thymectomy. This therapeutic possibility is obviously important in the management of an individual patient, but in addition, it implies a causal relationship between the thymoilla and this obscure form of anemia.
Authors had experienced successful treatment of pure red cell aplasia in association with thymoma, who underwent surgical resection of thymoma withh administration of prednisolone and cyclophosphamide for complete remission. Literatures were reviewed.
